What is the difference between absorbable and non-absorbable sutures?

Absorbable sutures are gradually broken down by the body and do not need removal; they are often used for internal tissue. Non-absorbable sutures remain until removed, or permanently, and are used where longer tissue support is needed.

When ordering sutures

  • Type: absorbable or non-absorbable.
  • Material: such as polyglactin, nylon or polypropylene.
  • Size (for example 3-0 or 4-0) and length.
  • Needle type, shape and size.

The surgeon selects the appropriate suture for each procedure. We supply surgical sutures with our partner Taiseer Medical.
