Regulations

What is the difference between medical supplies and medical devices?

"Medical supplies" is a common trade term for consumable products such as sutures and operating room disposables. "Medical devices" is a broader regulatory term that covers many of these supplies as well as instruments, equipment and implants.

In everyday use

  • Medical supplies: products that are consumed or used once, such as sutures and disposables.
  • Devices and instruments: products used repeatedly or implanted, such as surgical instruments, power tools and implants.

From a regulatory perspective

Most medical supplies in Saudi Arabia fall under the SFDA's medical device regulations, so they are treated as medical devices in terms of requirements and documentation.
